Arrigato, Kaoru-san for your kindness and courtesy, welcoming Jeremy and Renee into your house. Although they are experience travelers, it is good to know they have friends in Japan. Maybe we can post some of their travel pix on JG when they return.

Is the Navy Chapel in Yokohama still there
|

My wife and I were married in the Navy Chapel in Yokohama in November 1958. That was the only time I have been there and this much time later, I don't remember exactly where it was located. Is it still there or has it gone the way of other U.S. facilities in the area? A long time ago and not too many folks still alive who would remember, but any recollections would be appreciated.

There was a very large church, up hill from Yo-Hi as I recall. It was used by several Christian faiths on Saturdays and Sundays.
The building caught fire and burned in the late 1950s. I remember seeing hymnals and little St. Christopher medals spread out on the parking area where they had been shoveled out by the fire department.
FEN radio had a reporter on scene and he told what was happening by telephone from nearby.

Chapel Center

I recall both of these chapels. They closed the downtown chapel center and opened the one on the hill up above Yo-Hi sometime in 53-54 while I was living in Yokohama as an Army brat.

Yokohama Navy Exchange photos

I just discovered an unbelievable photo gallery of the Yokohama Navy Exchange and the Army PX that proceeded it on a web site I didn't know existed. http://yohidevils.net/FSA/index.htm (Yokohama PX Area) There are about fifty more photo galleries of various places and events that I haven't had time to look through yet. Enjoy!

Dave-san, thanks for the link to the Yo-Hi Devils site. If you click on "Pick of the Litter" and then scroll down to Feb. 15, 2014, you'll find me there as a Yo-Hi cheerleader, just as you might remember me from the school bus that took us from our Bluff neighborhood to Nasugbu Beach Elementary School and Yo-Hi.
Also, thanks for the pictures of the Yokohama chapels. I attended Sunday Masses with my parents at the downtown chapel and once a week after school I walked up to the chapel on the hill next to Yo-Hi for religious instruction that happily included donuts and hot chocolate.
Hello to Peter, Eric, Kaoru, and others whom I recall. Any news from Steffi? Having been away for a while, I need to catch up.

Barbara:
Another trip down memory lane, f'sure. I recall visiting the old Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. My dad had two or three functions at the Imperial each year. I always thought the interior of this place was very exotic. Pity is was torn down decades ago...

Thanks to you Kaoru for helping me find the university with Google Maps. It is farther from the Yokohama Port and water than I imagined.

bit of history

The caves around Yokohama were nothing like the shelter featured in the newspaper story. Nearly all appeared to be hand dug in the soft sandstone bluffs and could not have taken in more than a handful of people. One "cave" was in the Area 2 housing complex. It featured a very low ceiling, probably forcing a user to slide in feet first. Another was near Sankien Gardens, overlooking the bay. A large cave near our house in Sannotani was quiet large and had been boarded up with a single smoke stack protruding. A family with several children lived in this cave.
