today's NHK TV news at noon says Airbnb has cancelled the reservations of illegal hosts in check-in dates between June 15 and June 19. (they don't say how many reservations are cancelled. but, I think it should be 80 % or more.) according to the government, legal hosts are only about 700 on May 11. it sounds that the government has been extremely angry against Airbnb's continuous law violence.

I wonder what law violence is mentioned here.
Has Airbnb as a company ever been prosecuted in Japan in relation to this minpaku issue? I have not heard of such news.
I should say Airbnb was too late in normalizing its list of private-house accommodations, but that does not seem to constitute a criminal law violence.
Before the new act was established, there had been no legal regulation in Japan for the business of acting as a go-between (like Airbnb) regarding private-house lodgement.
This minpaku issue is among the cases where the law does not keep up with changing social circumstances.

It should probably be "violation" rather than "violence". But, it is not just AirBNB that is the target, it is all of the booking sites that offer un-registered properties. I asked one of the companies about their screening for legality a while back (not AirBNB) and they said they didn't bother to check - they just put up whoever was happy to pay the 15% to 20% commission.
