Its not illegal, its not even thought of as existing, but homosexuality has a long history in Japan- especially in relation to the Samurai, the Kabuki and among Buddhist monks who do not see it as being breaking their vow of chastity. Iys common amongst students at university or single young men but it often is not a lifestyle choice as in the west. More it is related to friendship or sexual release and gay marriage is very uncommon.
