Yup it sounds like a chinese custom (I'm chinese by the way).

The Groom-to-be parents gives the Bride-to-be parents some form of gift (usually money) as a form of dowry.

In Singapore it's quite common actually, i've heard dowries can go up to S$88000!

My dad is totally against the idea as he says it's like selling your precious daughter away.

I think it stems from old culture when the girl leaves her family to go live with the husband, so the dowry is to compensate the bride's family and thanks for bringing her up or something along that line.
