because my hotel (Comfort Inn) suprised me with a bigger bill than I had booked.
That's a bad surprise! Did you book through the hotel directly or used some reservation website? If the latter, which site did you use?

I booked with expedia.ca. I found that you have to be persistent with the front desk people otherwise you get pushed around. They wanted me to prove that I had booked that rate per night with a printout, but their computer was not working so I could not print it out. Anyway I learned from the experience the third time. 2 hotels did this to me!
Anyway, thanks Uji for all the great advise!
