Re: Loved places to eat in/around Shinjuku 2016/2/29 13:21
I, also, usually don't eat desserts or even eat out, it's just that I have the opportunity to be in Tokyo and before coming here I was told it's the best city on earth for dining out so that's why I am trying to take advantage of this opportunity and try the best restaurants I can get to (even though it is quickly draining my bank account!). Good thing I only have a little while left, lol!

Here is the health food store:
https://www.facebook.com/waseda.natural/

About Abasque, I could have totally understood the situation if it was a child, but this was a grown woman bigger than me! (she was pretty though)

As for my favourite, I still have a while to go so I will try to post that selection perhaps on my last day here.

Here are the latest places:

Sushi no Masa in Nishi Azabu. I had a 2300 reservation for here. This took about two hours and they served me about 42 different pieces of sushi. I have over 42 different pictures of each and every one. This was an excellent meal and the chef couldn't believe that I still had room for more, haha! The green tea here was the best I've ever had, very smooth and authentic. Also, they made sure to keep it hot. Excellent service. I would highly recommend this place if you like raw fish like I do. I want to rate this as another perfect restaurant but am hesitant because it is very expensive.

Next, was Banraien in Ooimachi. I went during lunch to try out what the article recommended but alas this is one of those restaurants that only allows bookings of three or more. If you get friendly with them, they may allow you in with just two people. But they are open for only one hour for lunch and judging by the quality of the lunch meal I had the dinner must be absolutely amazing. It was the best chow mein I have ever had!! The noodles they used were new to me, I have never seen noodles like that before. They were crunchy and just slightly soft. Much much better than anywhere I tasted in Beijing and I did the same thing for Beijing that I am doing for Tokyo. This restaurant is much better! I was thinking of just going on a date with someone there but again it is very expensive according to their owner so maybe if I ever return to Tokyo with family or very good friends then I will be able to try it out. They also let me try their almond tofu dessert since they could tell that I really wanted to try them for dinner but had no-one to accompany me. It was excellent.

Next was Il Lupone in Nakameguro. I had a pizza that was half sausage and half spicy pastrami or something like that. It wasn't bad. Then I had a calzone, tripe stew, and the ricotta cheese eggplant dish. For dessert, I had the custard ice cream. This was very good, I had a feeling that this would be good from the dessert I had at Chez Tomo, I think. I thought this restaurant was ok overall.

After this was Matsuwa in Kyobashi. This was a nice little lunch that gets extremely crowded fast. Good thing I was the first one in line. They only serve Aji Furai Teishoku and I thought it was good. It was my first time, so I don't really know how to judge it but it wasn't bad.

After lunch, at Matsuwa I went right around the corner to Hidemi Sugino to finally try the Marie. I also had the Caramel Tart. Both of them were very good, especially the tart. It had pistachios and wine in it, mmm!

Next up was Irifune in Okusawa. I had the Maguro set, and it was good. After Sushi no Masa though, I didn't think it was worth it for the price. I wouldn't get the set if I could do it all over again.

Next, was Kanda Yabusoba in Akihabara. I had the cold soba and then hot duck breast soba. I am not a soba fan so I didn't think I would like this. And I didn't. But you might if you like Soba...

Then, I went to Horaiya in Ueno. This was very good Tonkatsu. I would recommend it.

I also went to Mihashi while I was in Ueno to try the Anmitsu. I was disappointed though. The article made their anmitsu out to be the best available. I was already skeptical since they used soft serve ice cream instead of a more 'premium' ice cream. And yes I was correct. It wasn't very good at all. I didn't think it would work anyway with strawberries, especially at the price point they were selling. Perhaps, if they used the really expensive strawberries that are bursting with flavor and juice then that would be better but then the price would likely be triple. Daidaiya's animitsu is in a different league and is much MUCH better than here.

Lastly yesterday I went to Go Go Curry in Shibuya. I had the Major class with large rice. Not bad, and yes I finished all of it (excluding the rice)! ^^

I've been a bit busy so I'll just write a bit. Here are some of the places I've been to lately:

Pretty good.

This was really good but the chef mandated that you had to buy alcohol or no service. I didn't like that but on the other hand, the warm sake went very well with the food.

Pretty good.

Pretty good.

This wasn't bad.

The beef stew here was very good, everything else was ok. Pretty good portions for the price though.

Very greasy pizza, I didn't really like it. Strange restaurant, I bumped my head numerous times on the stairs. Meh service.

http://tabelog.com/tokyo/A1326/A132602/13114072/
Pretty good but not spicy at all.

This was ok but not worth the hype. They have this strange waiting system because of it's Michelin rating, I guess.

This was THE absolute worst meal that I have had in Japan and the absolute worst value for a meal that I have ever had in my life! To start, I will say that this restaurant is beautiful, there's no denying that. Beautiful carpet, chairs, pictures on the wall, bathroom, diningware, actual orchids were on every table, etc. etc. BUT

The food is not good! And furthermore it is a outrageously expensive! My meal came out to about 30,250 Yen and I noticed that over 4000 Y was in various taxes alone. If you must visit here, I would highly recommend that you visit at lunch and get the cheapest course meal that is around 6000 Yen. Just eat that and don't add anything extra (they charge you for every little thing). I will never try Apicius ever again.

Probably the best ramen that I have tasted here in Japan so far! I really enjoyed this. The juicy and tasty meat is what really makes it special.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I found a supermarket near Akhihabara called Life or something like that and they sell Wilkinson's Ginger Ale Vodka (also Wilkinson's Tonic Vodka). I tried it and it was pretty smooth. I am always on the lookout. ^^

Thanks for the link to the health food store in Waseda. I will definitely stop by the next time I'm there.

Life in Akihabara sounds familiar. I must go through my wallet to see if I've been there. That is, if I haven't thrown away the receipts. If it is the same place, I got some delicious green tea flavored oat cookies there. They were handing out samples and I had to get two boxes, they were so good.

I also appreciate you listing places that weren't such a great experience.

Ginger ale vodka. Can't say I've ever heard of that one before. I could give it a try, especially if the alcohol content is in the range of chu-hai. I don't usually drink at all, but I wanted to try lemon chu-hai when I was in Japan. I like lemon-anything and I gotta admit it was good.

Always glad to read these reviews. Wish I could contribute more to this thread. I'm not a very adventurous eater. When I find a restaurant or a particular dish I really like, I want the same over and over again. Ate gyoza for three days on my last trip. Before that, it was takoyaki.

I'm the opposite, it seems, I get tired very quickly of something after I have eaten it once. Perhaps, it's because I have so many chefs in my family and I am always eating something new everyday or I did growing up, at least.

http://tabelog.com/tokyo/A1307/A130701/13001248/
Pretty good.

http://tabelog.com/tokyo/A1307/A130701/13154183/
This was much better than I expected it to be. I would recommend here for a nice lunch. The portions were nice and everything was all-around very good. I had the "Megir lunch" dish (spelling may be incorrect).

http://tabelog.com/tokyo/A1302/A130201/13111899/
This was just ok.

http://tabelog.com/tokyo/A1301/A130101/13002329/
Here was very good. I had the lunch special and I really enjoyed it. I very much recommend trying this place once. Also, they now are the place with the best Indian tea.

http://tabelog.com/tokyo/A1318/A131807/13001048/
This place was just meh. The naan wasn't that good even though it is huge. Everything else was just ok.

But, I must say, the banana ice cream dessert was fun to eat. It wasn't really that delicious but it has potential. First, the bananas are too sweet and in addition to this, the choice to use coconut ice cream killed the dish in my opinion. Either use a more high quality coconut ice cream, make it in-house, or just opt for vanilla. I understand what the chef is trying to go for with this but it needs more work. The caramel, though, covering the ice cream and then being really chewy to eat was fun and made me feel like a kid again. If you have kids, they would probably really like this.

I didn't try much from this restaurant because the service is really poor. It's a shame too because the chimichonga I had wasn't bad at all. The person serving me seemed to be in such a bad mood that I had no more desire to try anything else after my first selection.

http://tabelog.com/tokyo/A1304/A130401/13094166/
This was very good, much better than I expected. I didn't like the sides though. But all-in-all a solid choice.

http://tabelog.com/tokyo/A1310/A131002/13141456/
I didn't really like the tonkatsu here. It was more chewy than the other places that I have been too. Their 'special' sauce though was nice.

So... what was the best Restaurant you went to? :)
Which one would you recommend if you only could choose one?

And what I don't understand: How can you afford this every day? O_O

Thanks a lot!
