Today I visited Tenshochi Park, a popular cherry blossom spot in Kitakami, where I found the cherry blossoms to be at their best. The entrance to the park is about a 15-20 minute walk from Kitakami Station, about 20 minutes by bullet train from Morioka, Iwate Prefecture. Tenshochi Park extends for about two kilometers and contains approximately 10,000 cherry trees. I found the cherry blossoms to be at their best viewing when I visited. The weather forecast for the next few days looks to be sunny with mild temperatures, and I expect the flowers to remain at their best through to this coming weekend.

A cherry blossom festival is held at Tenshochi Park until April 29. During the festival period, the cherry trees are illuminated from 18:00 to 20:00. Food and drink stalls and trucks are also open during the festival period.

As the mainstream cherry blossom season has mostly ended in many cities west of Tokyo, those who still want to catch the cherry blossoms should start looking farther north. The estimated best viewing information for the major cities in northeastern Japan can be found on our cherry blossom forecast page.
